The Vancouver Thunderbirds Hockey 4 Terminators recently won the honour to introduce Ron Maclean and this week's Hockey Night in Canada line-up which will be seen country-wide. With over 450 submissions, teams were expected to communicate what makes their team so special and why the team stands out as the team to be selected for this great honour. Overwhelming spirit, a passion for hockey and team commitment fit the bill for the judges. The Terminators' entry highlighted the team's love for hockey and showcased how, like most kids who grow up in Vancouver's mild and rainy winters, they embrace any opportunity to play the game whether it is in backyard alleys, playgrounds or the basement rec room.

The Tbirds Terminators will be featured on CBC Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday, January 23rd starting at 3:30 p.m. when they introduce the evening's lineup of games. The filming took place last Thursday at UBC and the kids had full opportunity to show off their spirit and skills during practice.

CONGRATULATIONS VTMHA ATOM A2 TEAM!

Hockey Canada has announced that the Vancouver Thunderbird Atom A2 team was one of the 13 minor hockey teams chosen as the beneficiaries of this year’s 'Future Team Canada’ program. In December, Hockey Canada partnered with the Wayne Gretzky Foundation and the Hockey Canada Foundation to launch the fifth year of the ‘Future Team Canada’ program that rewards and recognizes minor hockey teams across the nation for the amount of heart they show rather than the amount of games they win.

The Atom A2 team took on the challenge of describing their team’s values, special characteristics, dedication to hockey and their community involvement(highlighting how they worked as a team filling backpacks with blankets, clothing, shoes and food for the homeless, providing toys to the Christmas Bureau and food to the Union Gospel Mission).  This is an amazing group of 9 and 10 year olds with 6 great coaches that are unbelievably instrumental in assisting in the growth of each child as great hockey players and outstanding members of our community

ATOM A2 FINISH OFF BANNER YEAR!

The team that never gave up.  The Atom A2 team started the season with 1-4-0 record, and then went on a 15 game unbeaten streak to win their league championship with a 14-4-2 record. The start to their Final 4 championship round was just as rocky as they lost their first game to Hollyburn 4-2.

However, just as they have for the entire season, they just kept working and never stopped believing in themselves. They beat BWC 2-1 and North Van 5-3 to win the Tier 3 playoff championship and win their second banner of the year. Congratulations to coach Gary Hunter and his team on a great season!

Vancouver T-Birds Midget AAA Team Wins Wild Final Four Playoff

The Vancouver T-Bird Midget AAA team was pushed to the limit in the PCAHA Final 4 Playoffs hosted at Sunset, Kitsilano and Chilliwack Arenas over the past 6 days. A tie-breaker game against Chilliwack, in Chilliwack,  was required to determine a winner in the highly competitive Blue Group playoff.

The T-Birds had to overcome early game deficits, as well as the burden of expectations they had developed over a nearly flawless regular season, to go undefeated in the playoffs.  A thrilling 3- 2 victory in the tie-breaker game in Chilliwack launches the T-Bird Midget AAA team into the Provincials for the third consecutive year.  The Midget AAA Provincials run from March 17 through March 21 in Comox.

Congratulations to the team and best of luck at the Provincials!!!

Midget AAA T-Birds  Win .... Again!

After coming very close last year (lost the final in overtime), this year's Vancouver Thunderbird Midget AAA team claimed the association's first Richmond International Midget AAA Tournament championship with convincing   5-0 and 4-1 victories in the tournament semi-final and final.  Playing 8 games over 5 days, the Thunderbirds triumphed over 28 teams in the tournament's Midget AAA division.

The Thunderbirds reinforced their number 1 provincial ranking, scoring 4 unanswered goals in the third period of their quarter-final matchup against number 2 ranked Ridge Meadows, including the winner with 11 seconds remaining.  This capped a stunning comeback from a 3-0 deficit heading into the third period of the highly anticipated T-Birds/Ridge Meadows contest.  Going undefeated at the Richmond Tournament added 8 more victories to the T-Bird's win/loss record this year of 37 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties.

The T-Birds will now take a one week break, before resuming their assault on the PCAHA Midget Tier 1 regular season championship.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ATOM C6 TEAM!!

VTMHA's  Atom C6 team (The Ice Hawks) played in the Sno-King Tournament in Kirkland, Wash. over the weekend (Nov. 23-25) and the kids won! They were so thrilled. They were undefeated in the tournament.
One parent from the team said:
"It was a really exciting tournament - in just a matter of days the kids changed from a group that barely knew each other into a cohesive unit that went out and worked hard on each and every shift.

That they won was really just the icing on the cake - to see them supporting each other, working like a team and having the best time of their lives was really amazing to see."

VTMHA Bantam AAA Wins President's League Banner

see photo..

The AAA Bantam team fought their way into the PCAHA playdowns by beating Van Minor in a two-game series.  The boys tied the first game against them and as result had to play a second game to see who got to play against BWC.  John's boys played a very determined game and won 4-3 in over-time scoring in the last minute of the 3rd period to tie it up and force the overtime period.   However, they faced the unbeaten, tier 1 BWC team in the first round who took down John's team in 2 straight games.  BWC ultimately went on to the win the BC Provincials and Western Canada Championships without losing a game.
In the President's round they played hard against Van MHA, Burnaby MHA, Richmond MHA and Semiahmoo MHA.  The boys won against Van Minor 7-5 in a hard fought battle, a 3-3 tie against Richmond, lost 4-2 in a strange match against Burnaby MHA but beat Semiahmoo soundly 5-2 in a nasty-chippy affair. The boys took the blows but paid them back with some hard working goals-for.
The keys to their success were the players' fitness, the discipline, and determination at the right moments in each game.  John also had solid goaltending to rely upon. A nice end to a season with the PRESIDENT'S SERIES banner.

March 26, 2007

VTMHA's Midget AAA won the Final 4 and at the BC Midget AAA Provincials our T-Bird team reached the championship final against Juan de Fuca. The game was well played and very exciting with the Thunderbirds scoring first and held the Island power house to only three goals over two periods – the end score was  5-1. In addition, the Birds won the sportsmanship award for the tournament.

This team has won a number of titles and awards this season including the Lower Mainland Championship banner, the Playoff banner and is now a BC Provincial finalist. The record of 47 wins 7 loses and 7 ties was an amazing record for a very deserving team.
