Attendance at Tryouts

All players are required to attend ALL assigned ice sessions. Failure to show will immediately result in the player being assigned to the C Division for the season (P-9 Section 2.2) with the following exceptions only and with the required notification:

  • P-9 Section 2.3 - (summary of section) Any player that is required to miss an ice session due to sickness or injury must provide a medical note to the Executive Director no later than 2 hours prior to the scheduled ice session. If the player will be missing more than one ice session, a discussion with the Executive Director and Board member oversight will be required to ensure all factors are understood by both the player and the Association.
  • P-9 Section 2.4 - (summary of section) any player that is required to miss an ice session due to work obligations must provide a letter from their employer in advance of the ice session.
  • P-9 Section 2.5 - (summary of section) any player trying out for Major Midget or Junior teams that has conflicting ice times must notify the Executive Director no later than 2 hours prior to the scheduled ice session.
  • P-9 Section 2.6 - (summary of section) any player that must miss an ice session for exceptional personal circumstances must seek permission in advance of the missed session by emailing the Executive Director or the Board member overseeing the age division. NOTE: Family vacations are not considered exceptional circumstances and do not qualify under this section.

August 30

Atom, Peewee and Bantam divisions have now completed Phase 2.

Practice team rosters will be setup on TeamSnap for all future communications for these teams.

Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who helped ensure the ice times and various other elements ran smoothly especially our three volunteer coordinators - Nancy Lis, Ann Mukai and Hareesh Sara.

August 28 (8:30 pm)

Atom rosters for Thursday are now posted. Interviews will be held commencing ~1:30 pm and all players and, if desired, one parent who wishes to attend the meeting with the player should gather in the upstairs hallway overlooking the rink. Please make your way there for 1:15 pm to be ready for the start of interviews. Each interview will take approximately 2-3 minutes. Any parent who is not with their player should wait in the lower lobby next to the rink and NOT immediately outside or in the main level lobby. We ask that we give the players a bit of space as this is a potentially emotional experience as they receive their assignment for next week. Thank you for your cooperation.

Peewee rosters for Friday are now posted below. Interviews for all peewee players will be held commencing ~2:30 pm. Please have the players make their way to the hallway upstairs overlooking the rink where they will wait. This is a large group so it is likely to take about an hour from the time we start so we ask everyone to be patient. Parents, please either wait in your cars or in the lower lobby in order to allow players to leave without having to walk through everyone. We ask that everyone departs as soon as your interview has been concluded and not congregate in the parking lot so that players who may not want to see others immediately after are granted that respect. Thank you for your cooperation.

August 27 (11:00 pm) update

Atom rosters and volunteer sign up sheets for Wednesday are now posted below.

Peewee rosters and volunteer sign up sheets for Wednesday are now posted below. Please note that we will be continuing with a 3 group format for Wednesday's session which may or may not change for Friday's ice times.

Bantam: please note that following tonight's session, due to the overall numbers decreasing, there will not be a Thursday session. No rosters will be posted and all players will receive a report card with their assignments tomorrow. Any player wishing to come in for an interview will still be able to request a time on Thursday afternoon. More information will be sent via email with the report cards.

August 25 (6:00 pm) update

Atom division: Stage 1 complete. Stage 2 rosters and volunteer sign up links are now posted below.

Peewee division: Stage 1 complete. Stage 2 rosters and volunteer sign up links were posted August 24.

Bantam division: Stage 1 complete. Stage 2 rosters and volunteer sign up are now posted.

August 24 (9:30 pm) update

The tryouts started today with the goalies and the entire peewee division on the ice. Tomorrow will be the atom and bantam divisions. Be sure to check your groups to know what time your player is on the ice, and there are still a couple last volunteer spots that need to be filled so kindly sign up using the blue button listing your skill group found immediately below the red skill group button.

For those coming tomorrow, you must complete your ePact profile AND your rep commitment form before you will receive a jersey. Look in your email for a message from ePact for your unique link to complete that step and click here to go to the rep commitment form. It is much easier to do this from the comfort of your home than in the lobby at the rink.

Parking will be impacted by the 1:05 pm Vancouver Canadians game tomorrow so give yourself some extra time if you need to be at Hillcrest anytime from 10:00 am as parking lots begin to close.

Reminder that the mandatory parent information meetings will be taking place tomorrow. You have two options to attend - 9:30 am or 2:15 pm. The meeting will take place upstairs in Hillcrest in Room 322 and will be approximately 20-30 minutes.

Peewee rosters for the Monday scrimmages have now been posted below. Please confirm the time your player is on and the blue buttons below are now updated for the Monday ice times. For scrimmages we will need a timekeeper, HCSP, 4 dressing room monitors both before and after the ice time and a bench assistant on each bench so if you are planning to attend the scrimmage, we do need everyone to help this week.

August 23 update

Welcome to Tryouts Eve! We hope the players are excited, well-hydrated and ready to go. We are ready to go for the weekend and look forward to seeing all of the players on the ice.

Parking
Please note that we share a parking lot with the Vancouver Canadians and when there are games on, parking is a little more complicated. Please plan ahead around the following scheduled games. Note that parking in the Hillcrest lot becomes impacted at 10:00 am for 1:05 games and 4:00 pm for 7:05 pm games. Street parking is an option but please ensure you follow all signs as they will ticket/tow you if you park in a resident's only area. For those who are confident their child can make it into the building on their own, or you have two adults in the vehicle, you can drop off in the roundabout out front but if you need to park and walk in together, please plan for additional time if your ice time is during an impacted time period.

Schedule of Canadians games Aug 24-30
Saturday, August 24 - 7:05 pm start
Sunday, August 25 - 1:05 pm start
Monday, August 26 - 7:05 pm start
Wednesday, August 28 - 7:05 pm start
Thursday, August 29 - 7:05 pm start
Friday, August 30 - 1:05 pm start

Volunteers
Thanks to everyone who has signed up to help with their session this weekend. There are a couple final spots to fill so if you haven't yet, be sure to click on the blue button under the group listing in each division below and sign up to help us make things go smoothly.

Reminder that players will not receive a tryout jersey unless their ePact has been updated as per the instructions in the email invitation you would have received from ePact AND they have a completed rep commitment form. If you have not done so yet, please do so before you arrive as it is much easier to do this at home than on your phone in the lobby at Hillcrest.

Sunday, August 18 Update

Ice Assignments - Stage 1
Ice time assignments have been posted below for the Atom, Peewee and Bantam Skills session (Stage 1).

Goalies will attend their division's goalie skills session on Saturday as well as their assigned skills session with the skaters.

Skaters have been assigned based on their 2018/19 team (skill group for 2010 players). All new to TBirds players will be assessed in the skills session to determine their level within the Thunderbird association. Goalies have not been assigned based on their 2018/19 team, rather they will be placed in different groups in Stage 1 and 2 to assess their level against different groups of skaters.

Volunteers needed during ice sessions
Parent volunteers will be needed for each ice time. Volunteer role descriptions can be found here. Note that two adults must be supervising the dressing rooms at all times for all age groups.

Each ice time has it's own volunteer sign up sheet so once you find which group your child is in, select the applicable Parent Volunteer button and help us ensure that all dressing rooms will be able to be open and ice times start on time. Thank you in advance!

Parent Information Meeting - Mandatory attendance
Thunderbirds offers two options during the first weekend of the tryouts so every member family will have the ability to attend this brief meeting. It is a Hockey Canada mandate that these meetings be attended by a minimum of one parent/guardian of all rep players. For any atom families, we do allow one parent/guardian to join their player in the in-person interview process however that parent must be on the sign-in list.

Option #1: Sunday, August 25 - 9:30 am - Hillcrest Room 322 (upstairs in the hallway overlooking the rink)

Option #2: Sunday, August 25 - 2:15 pm - Hillcrest Room 322 (upstairs in the hallway overlooking the rink)

Reminders
1) If you have not completed your ePact profile (instructions emailed to you from the office) or your Rep Commitment form (click here) for the upcoming season, please note that these must be completed prior to being allowed to participate in the tryouts.

2) IMPORTANT: Players must attend all scheduled ice times. If they need to miss for a medical reason, please scroll down to the "Attendance at tryouts" section for more information.

3) If you are new to our tryout process, please be sure to review the information on the main rep tryout page prior to arriving onsite. If you have questions, please contact our Executive Director.

August 8, 2019 Update

With registration now complete, we are pleased to announce that 271 Thunderbirds registered for the upcoming rep tryouts.

At the completion of each stage during the August 24-30 period, ice assignments, parent volunteer roles needed and any other information will be displayed on this page with the most recent information appearing at the top. It is the responsibility of each player and/or parent/guardian to check this page following each stage to identify their next assigned ice time. Assignments for ice sessions will be posted here as soon as possible following the conclusion of the final ice session for each age division each day.

All sessions in Phases 1 & 2 for Atom, Peewee and Bantam (August 24-30) will take place at Hillcrest Centre. Ice time assignments for the first ice session will be posted no later than Tuesday, August 20.

About the External Evaluators

In addition to the non-parent coaches, we will have a number of external evaluators assisting in the process this year. For each age division, there will be four external evaluators participating along with support from goalie specific evaluators throughout the week. These gentlemen bring with them significant experience coaching and scouting from NHL, WHL, BCHL, PIJHL, major midget, and various BC Hockey high performance experiences in addition to playing in junior to NHL levels.

Board of Director Oversight

As is the standard process, Board members will work with the Executive Director to provide oversight to the tryout process. The assignment of Board oversight for this year's tryouts will be:

Steve Yan-Klassen (Director, Rep) and Bruce Gregg (Associate Director, Rep) will share oversight responsibility for the duration.

We will need your help!

Each ice time will have a few volunteer roles that we will need our parents to assist with in order for the rep tryouts to be successful. We will do our best to remind you but feel free to be proactive and select the button located on the top right for the sign up form for the next round of ice times. We will update the form each day during the tryouts so you will know what ice times your child(ren) are assigned to and can choose accordingly. We cannot start ice times unless we have the roles filled so  thank you in advance for helping us with this! More information on the volunteer roles can be found here.

The first sign up button is posted at the top of the page or can be found here. These roles are for general areas such as helping transport and sort our jerseys, collect and wash them at the completion of the sessions and help us find people throughout the week to fill any holes in the volunteer sign ups.

Items required prior to arriving at tryouts

  1. All participants have been invited to update/create their ePact profile. Thunderbirds utilizes this online medical information platform to assist in quickly obtaining the medical history of our players event of an injury during the tryouts. Information is not shared with the evaluators or reviewed by staff, therefore the information will not impact any assessments being conducted. We expect all participants will have medical clearance to be on the ice and require the parents/guardians to ensure their player is medically eligible to participate.
  2. Completion of the Rep Commitment / Other Activity form - click here. All players must submit the form and note the rep commitment section must be read and signed by the player as well as their parent(s)/guardian(s).
